With ample seating for eight, plenty of cargo and towing capacity and the best fuel economy in its class, the new Chevy  Traverse is certainly versatile.

Powered by a 281-horsepower, 3.6L V-6 paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, the  Traverse gets up to 24 mpg on the highway while having plenty of power to tow up to 5,200 pounds.

And the  Traverse is available with all-wheel drive to provide sure traction throughout the year.

With a sleek, aerodynamic body, distinctive double-stacked front grille and wrapped headlamps and taillamps, the  Traverse has a smooth refined look. The roomy interior offers seating for seven or eight.

"You can easily fit three 6-foot guys in the back seat with plenty of head and legroom," said Michael "Magic Mike" Kulesia, sales consultant for Gates Chevy World in Mishawaka. "And with easy access entry, the  Traverse isn't just for large families or soccer moms."

The Chevy  Traverse leads the pack in cargo capacity, too, with more than 116 cubic feet of cargo space when all the seats are folded flat. With the seats up, there is still lots of room behind the seats for carrying whatever is needed.

All three trim lines are well-equipped with safety features, enabling it to earn five-star ratings in front and side-impact crashes.

The  Traverse has six air bags including head curtain side impact air bags that protect all three rows. Standard safety equipment also includes ABS brakes with traction and stability control, a tire pressure monitoring system and OnStar with a one-year turn-by-turn navigation system.

Other standard features on the  Traverse LS include power windows, power doors, power outside mirrors, air conditioning, cruise control, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, 17-inch wheels, an AM/FM CD audio system with auxiliary input jack and XM satellite radio.

The  Traverse 1LT adds power heated outside mirrors, 18-inch wheels, an ultrasonic rear parking assist program, an eight-way power driver's seat and a leather wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls.

The  Traverse 2LT further adds a power remote liftgate, second-row captain's chairs, a tri-zone climate control system, a remote vehicle starter, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, a Bose sound system and rear seat audio controls.

The top of the line  Traverse LTZ boasts a V-6 engine with more horsepower, low-beam projector headlamps, 20-inch wheels, leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, a four-way power passenger seat with memory, a touch-screen navigation radio with rearview camera display, a 115-volt power outlet and XM NavTraffic with a three month trail subscription.

"That NavTraffic is something else," said Kulesia. "Unlike Dorothy, you can always find your way home."

The Gates Automotive Group showroom at 636 W. McKinley Ave., Mishawaka, is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
